Ice Hockey in the Land of Sand Home Alumni

QIIHL Home Doha's City Center Mall has been the home of the QIIHL since it's inception. The rink is small but the action is furious. The boards are short but the view is long. We play 4 on 4 with a ball! Pucks are too dangerous here. The league awaits the new rink at Villagio where once again we'll hear the ping of the puck off the glass.

First Ball Drop The first ever ball drop by Jeff Robinson between Kevin Sage and I'm guessing Greg Krahulec. A bearded Mike Long with Hope-Ross in the background. Not sure about the red guy with the cage?

Ice Cruisers This may be the first season champs. There's Lance Mierendorf, Dave Lee and Jeff Robinson. The rest were before my time. Let me know and I'll list the names.

Dubai Winners This team won it all in Dubai 'C' Division

Lance Mierendorf Lance Mierendorf and Richard Labrosse founded the QIIHL in 2003. Thanks to Lance and Richard, we play hockey in the Land of Sand. The Mierendorf Labrosse Cup is awarded to the QIIHL Championship team.

Richard Labrosse The co-founder of the QIIHL. This shot is from Desert Cup 2006. Richard came out of retirement to help the league he founded. He played well enough to win the tournament's Most Sportsmanlike Player. Thanks Richard.

Jeff Robinson Jeff Robinson took over from Lance Mierendorf as league president in 2005. Jeff is a solid defenseman and was captain of the winning team, the Desert Heat in Desert Cup 2006.

Greg Scott The current (2006-2007) QIIHL President. Greg's dedication to hockey in Qatar is unrivalled. He is a tireless promoter of the game and is preparing for the league's big move to Villagio Mall. Greg is a skilled player, one of the top forwards in the league.

Kevin Deveau and Dave Lee Kevin retired from the Q after three years. A shoulder injury prompted his retirement. Kevin has since returned to the College of the North Atlantic Canada. Dave Lee is a QIIHL veteran. He single handedly organized the first Desert Cup 2006. Dave is pretty cagey around the net and often shakes hands with Laurie Tulk.

John, Paul and Ringo (Max) John Kerr, Paul Nolan and Max Keats of the CNAQ Breakers watch the action from the bench at the City Center Mall rink.

Mattias Deles Mattias makes up half of the French Connection. Mattias is from France and has great wheels. He leaves the rest sprawling behind.

Bill Robertson Bill played for several years in the Q, retiring in 2006. Bill is running a consulting business in Malaysia. Good luck with it Bill.

Mike Boulanger Desert Cup 2007 intensity. Boulanger, Suek and Sage ready to take on all comers.

Qataracts Desert Cup 2007. The Qataracts lost in the semi-finals to the eventual champs Dubai. Missing from the photo is Dave Lee.

Breakers Desert Cup 2007. The Breakers found themselves scrambling, finishing 1 - 5.

Pioneers Desert Cup 2007. The Pioneers found themselves in tough as well, finishing 1 - 5. Keith Loder led the team with 13 points.

Arab Fans Many Arabs enjoy hockey. They come to City Center to watch a game played on ice. During the Desert Cup, the three levels of the mall are standing room only.

Hockey Web Found this shot on a blog about Qatar. It looks like Dubai vs Breakers at the 2007 Desert Cup but I'm not sure. A pretty shot none the less.
